In Nishijin, there is a tradition of pasting textiles together on a folding screen to keep a memorial or record of the textile’s life.
Originally, a folding screen was a traditional Japanese piece of furniture used as a room divider to block out the wind and the eye, but by laminating beautiful Nishijin textile fabrics, the value of the screen as a work of art is enhanced.
The pasteboard is a large sample of Sakiori fabrics and is made up of a wide variety of fabrics, including Noh costumes, obi, kimono, kinran, meimono and kasuri, with no two being alike.
The designs and colours of these screens are truly spectacular.
