Some Nishijin-ori textiles feature a technique that weaves in gold-leaf thread—made by cutting gold-leaf-covered washi paper into fine, thread-like strips—or gold thread with a core of gold leaf, creating a majestic luster.
Nishijin developed as a center for high-quality textiles under the patronage of Hideyoshi, the elder brother featured in this year’s NHK Taiga drama “The Toyotomi Brothers.” Known for his love of gold, Hideyoshi lavishly adorned castle keep towers and furnishings with gold leaf and even created a golden tea room, thereby demonstrating his power. This opulent Momoyama culture also influenced Nishijin-ori.
This exhibition focuses on the gold favored by Hideyoshi, showcasing Nishijin textiles that feature gold.
Additionally, as a special exhibit, we will display a valuable replica of the Jinbaori (surcoat worn over armor) using a pattern of birds and beasts in tsuzure-ori weavings said to have been cherished by Hideyoshi. We hope you will enjoy exploring the golden world of Nishijin textiles.
