The Kan’ei Imperial Procession, held in September of Kan’ei 3 (1626), was an event in which the Tokugawa shogunate invited Emperor Go-Mizunoo to Nijo Castle and hosted him there. It is said to have been a grand and magnificent procession involving a total of 9,000 people. Furthermore, over the course of five days, lavish and opulent festivities were held, featuring Noh theater, orchestral music, kemari (traditional Japanese soccer), and waka poetry.
Reflecting on this historic event from 400 years ago, the exhibition will feature elegant textiles that evoke the atmosphere of the imperial procession, focusing on fabrics used for the robes worn by court nobles and aristocrats, as well as fabrics for Edo-period and modern Noh costumes. Additionally, the exhibition will include tsuzure-ori fukusa (ceremonial cloths) woven with motifs such as the Imperial Chrysanthemum crest flags used by the Imperial Family and the Three Sacred Treasures.
