About Nishijin Textile

Nishijin Textile, a general term for Sakizome (prior dying of thread before cloth is woven) for figured cloth produced in Kyoto (Nishijin), in which the production is characterized by a high-volume of various kinds of goods with a low volume production of each kind. It has been designated as a national traditional crafts, since the date of February 2nd, Show year 51 (1976).
Together with the technology and the creativity, and expressiveness, tremendous effort of work has continued unbroken since the Heian period by the weavers of Nishijin.

About Nishijin

“Nishijin” is a registered trademark of Nishijin Industrial Association, in which production location covers a wide area, but the border is not defined.

There is nothing distinctively special in the administrative ward of Nishijin in terms of where the skilled workers are located. Instead, there are people engaged in the art, who are located in the northwestern region of Kyoto City, centered around Kamikyo-ku, and Kita-ku areas. For instance, the manufacturuers are situated in Marutamachi-dori area in the south, Kamigamo area in the north, Karasuma-dori in the east is, and in Nishioji-dori in the west.
